Effects of sustainable agricultural practices on farm income and food security in northern Ghana

Abstract The adoption of sustainable agricultural practices (SAPs) has been recommended by many experts and international institutions to address food security climate change problems. Global support for the Sustainable Development Goals focused attention on efforts up-scale SAPs in developing countries where growth populations incomes compromises resilience natural resources. This study investigates factors affecting smallholder farmers’ decisions adopt (improved seed, fertilizer, soil water conservation) impacts farm income security, using data collected from Ghana. Food is captured reduced coping strategy index household dietary diversity. multinomial endogenous switching regression model utilized selection bias issues. Results show that are influenced social demographics households, plot-level characteristics, extension services locations. Adopting all three larger positive than adopting single or two SAPs. Our findings advocate policies enhance quality service strengthen farmer-based organizations wider dissemination adequate SAP information. Farmers should be encouraged as a comprehensive package increasing ensuring security.
